The unclear reasons for putting SB1390 on the back burner
Californian House of Assembly Committee refused SB1390, a bill proposing legalization of sports betting in the Golden State, possibly due to fears of a federal confrontation.
It was obvious that the bill enjoyed wide support in the state Senate: it passed on a 32 to 2 vote two months ago, and was progressed by the Assembly's Governmental Organization Committee a month later on its way to a floor vote and passage to the governor's desk.
It also had a strong political support, and just two months ago 58 percent of Californians came out for legalised state sports betting, with 35 percent against.
Surprisingly enough, earlier this week the measure appeared to have run afoul of the Assembly Appropriations Committee, and was rejected for reasons that are not yet clear. So the bill's chances in the approaching legislative session at the of August have been effectively destroyed.
