After testing positive for Canrenone discovered in a urine sample collected June 15th, U.S. national team goalkeeper, Hope Solo was given a public warning from the U.S. Anti-Doping Agency. The warning was received and Solo, 30, will move forward as a member of the US Olympic soccer team.
''I took a medication prescribed by my personal doctor for pre-menstrual purposes that I did not know contained a diuretic,'' Solo said in a statement. ''Once informed of this fact, I immediately cooperated with USADA and shared with them everything they needed to properly conclude that I made an honest mistake, and that the medication did not enhance my performance in any way.''
''As someone who believes in clean sport, I am glad to have worked with USADA to resolve this matter and I look forward to representing my country at the 2012 Olympic Games in London,'' she said.
As one of the world's most renowned goal keepers, Solo lead the USA to second-place in the 2011 World Cup. She is also known for her performance in the World Cup China in 2007 which led the United States to the semifinals. Coach Greg Ryan replaced her in the game with Briana Scurry of Brazil. Scurry was a hero of the 1999 world champions however rusty. Solo made her disapproval of Ryan's decision known.
''It was the wrong decision, and I think anybody that knows anything about the game knows that,'' Solo said. ''There's no doubt in my mind I would have made those saves. ... You have to live in the present. And you can't live by big names. You can't live in the past.''
Solo was dismissed from the team and sent home from China. Pia Sundhage eventually came on board as coach and Solo has held the team's number one spot as goal keeper.
