Eremian Expecting Final Court Sentence on Thursday
UIGEA prosecutors out for blood This Thursday, Daniel Eremian (62) will hear a Massachusetts US District Court sentence based on the charges filed by the Unlawful Internet Gambling Enforcement Act 2006. The defendant was already found responsible of racketeering and conspiracy for running a multimillion-dollar gambling website with his brother back in December. Eremian was involved in the Antigua-based Sports Offshore internet sports betting activities together with Patrice Tierney, his sister known also as a politician's wife, and Robert Eremian, his brother, who is still escaping justice. Tierney is still on supervised probation after pleading guilty last year to assisting Robert Eremian file false tax reports. Judge Patti B. Saris is being pressured by the prosecution representatives to put Eremian in prison for four years, though the defendant has been already ordered by the court to pay $8 million as a forfeiture. The prosecutors claim such sentence would set an example to other offshore sports betting operators who dare defy US law. Allegedly, this is the first trial and sentencing in the six years since the Act was passed for the UIGEA prosecution specifically focused on internet sports betting. UIGEA submitted a sentencing submission to the court underlining that internet gambling industry, operators and players are carefully following the Eremian case, therefore the sentence should show that illegal operators cannot find shelter in offshore havens and commit crimes in the United States. “If the court's sentence does not provide sufficient punishment, other offshore gambling businesses may take it as a signal that U.S. laws have no teeth and that it is worth the risk to conduct their business in the United States,” reads the part of the UIGEA submission.
