Illegal Euro 2012 Betting Raises Concerns with Vietnam Authorities

Police struggles to prevent internet betting activities

Illegal Euro 2012 online betting gives a lot of trouble to the Vietnamese General Anti-Crime Police Department and the Ministry of Public Security whose attempts to prevent these activities did not prove very successful. Relying on cooperation with the internet service providers, authorities are struggling to shut down illegal operators, but they admit there are challenges to achieving permanent effects.

"We have banned up to 181 betting website addresses and 195 IP addresses across the country during the event. However, about 30 new betting websites open every day. It is hard to manage all of them at the same time. If banned, bookmakers will create new sites and IP addresses while simultaneously issuing access guidelines," said Nguyen Thanh Hoa, director of the Police Hi-Tech Criminal Unit.

The District Police reported arresting three men on alleged charges of hosting betting activities in Hanoi.
