Wayne Rooney's return in the England starting eleven was beneficial as the Manchester United striker headed headed home the only goal of the match.
Ukraine had a better start as Denys Garmash sent a shot over from long range before Marko Dević and Yevhen Konoplyanka saw their efforts blocked. The best chance fell to Oleh Gusev who sent a good effort just over the crossbar. Rooney was the first man to reply for England as he headed off target from a very good position following a cross from Ashley Young. Yarmolenko was then denied by Joe Hart and the first half ended goalless.
England struck three minutes after the break in a rather fortuitous manner. Gerrard delivered a cross from the right, it took a deflection, then squirmed through Andriy Pyatov's hands and on to Rooney who headed home from point-blank range.
Milevskiy headed one over in reply for Ukraine and then Joe Hart was called into action again to stop a shot from Devic, the ball went loose though and it was John Terry who cleared off the line. The other goalie saved a Glen Johnson effort at the other end as the game went wide open. Hart beat away a Konoplyanka shot, then Pyatov held a Rooney header, while substitute Andriy Shevchenko was unable to make an impact.
England finish top of Group D and they will meet Italy in the quarter finals.
