Lars Bender netted an 80th-minute winner as Germany made sure of finishing atop Group B. The Germans will meet Greece in the quarter finals in a game that has a rather heated political context.
Right-back Bender, playing because of Jerome Boateng's suspension, fired home on a counterattack 10 minutes from time after receiving a pass from Mesut Ozil. Michael Krohn-Dehli had previously canceled a 19th-minute opener from Lukas Podolski, who celebrated his 100th international appearance with a goal.
Germany could have had it a lot worse though as Jakob Poulsen hit the post soon after half-time with fine effort. Denmark were in desperate need of a goal though as Portugal were on course to beat the Netherlands, so they pushed more men forward in an attempt to bag a winning goal. But the choice backfired as Bender struck on a breakaway move.
Germany had the first good chance after just six minutes but Muller had a terrible finish from just five meters out. The Germans were the dominant force and Podolski's goal came as an obvious consequence of what was happening on the pitch. But Denmark pulled back level after just five minutes when Nicklas Bendtner flicked a header into the path of Eriksen who then crossed to Krohn-Delhi who nodded home for his second goal of the tournament.
Jakob Poulsen was the only man who went close for the Danes in the second half with a shot against the woodwork and Denmark were punished 10 minutes from time by Bender's first ever international goal.
Germany will meet Greece in the next round while Denmark go home after a proud performance in the so-called 'group of death'.
