Euro 2012: Spain eliminate Ireland, 4-0

Spain are beginning to look like a team that is capable of defending the 2008 title after a comfortable 4-0 triumph over Republic of Ireland. The Irish are left without a chance to advance to the last eight after losing both games so far.

Spain dominated the match quite clearly and snatched their 15th victory in the last 16 competitive matches thanks to a Fernando Torres goal in each half with David Silva and Cesc Fàbregas another pair.

Simon Cox had an early chance for Ireland as he unleashed a fine left-footed drive from distance that Iker Casillas parried. But that didn't scare the Spaniards and shortly afterward Torres bagged the opening goal just four minutes into the match. Spain gained control of the match after the goal and could have scored again before the break through Silva or Busquets.

The goal did come after the interval, David Silva fired one low into the bottom corner of the net through an overcrowded Irish defence. Then Given denied Xavi but could not do the same against Torres who scored his 30th goal for Spain after receiving an assist from Silva. Cesc Fabregas came off the bench to make it 4-0 and Ireland became the first team eliminated at Euro 2012. Spain will need a draw against Croatia on Monday to finish top of the group while Ireland will play for pride against Italy.
