Robin van Persie found the back of the net for the Netherlands this time but his goal was not enough to avoid defeat. Germany benefited from a superb first-half brace from Mario Gomez, who brought his tournament tally to three goals.
Bastian Schweinsteiger supplied two exquisite assists and fellow Bayern Munich player Gomez converted them into superb finishes. Van Persie halved the arrears for the Dutch but his side remain bottom of Group B without a point. They could, in theory, become the first team ever to qualify from a Euro group with three points, but that is just in theory. The quarter finals are in sight for Germany as they can qualify even if they lose the last match, provided that Portugal don't beat Holland.
Van Persie had two good chances inside the opening 11 minutes but he was unable to convert them into a much-needed goal. Mesut Özil replied with a fierce volley against a post, before Gomez bagged a beautiful opening goal on 24 minutes. The Bayern striker repeated himself before the break as he flashed a shot past the Dutch goalie after receiving another perfect assist from Schweinsteiger.
Klaas-Jan Huntelaar and Rafael van der Vaart were sent in at half time but it was Germany who had another pair of chances, brilliantly saved by Stekelenburg. Van Persie was stopped by Neuer at the end of the pitch but the Arsenal striker found the back of the net with a splendid effort on 73 minutes. The Germans held firm though and Joachim Low's men grabbed the three points which allow them to remain atop the Group B rankings with a total of six points.
