Serbian Sports Betting Deal Causes Discontent
State lottery's online sports betting agreement with Sportingbet not welcomed A lot of fuss arose in the Eastern European country Serbia around an online sports betting partnership between the state lottery Državna lutrija Srbije and UK betting group Sportingbet plc. The biggest discontent was expressed by the Serbian Association of Gambling Providers, which says it will contest the deal as illegal in terms of the country's laws and favoring of a foreign company over a local one. In its statement, the Association claimed: "Existing laws are grossly violated, and local companies unfairly pushed aside. [The state lottery] has chosen a foreign partner, company of questionable reputation, in a completely non-transparent way without publicly open competition, thus making it impossible for local companies to participate." In, addition, the Association of Gambling Providers demanded that Serbian authorities halt the lottery's foreign company activities and ensure that local operators get a fair possibility to get into any future deals. Prior to this, a similar deal was closed by the Državna lutrija Srbije with an external company - online gambling software developer Playtech plc for internet casino and poker products.
