70 Hopefuls Tee Off for Their Spot in the U.S. Open


The U.S. Open Qualifying is a progressive event including golfers worldwide playing in regional and sectional tournaments for an opportunity to qualify for a spot in the U.S. Open. This prestigious golf tournament is scheduled for June 14th - June 17th at the Olympic Club in San Francisco.

Approximately 70 players gather at Waterlefe Golf & River Club in Manatee County today in hopes of filling just one of the four or five spots in an upcoming sectional qualifying event. Many of the hopefuls are youngsters still in high school or attending IMG Academies in Bradenton. Other potential U.S. Open participants are veteran amateurs looking to reach a peak in their careers by making the U.S. Open. The majority of the player pool are professional golfers who have worked to make a living in the game and making it to the U.S. Open would be a momentous beginning to a successful golf career not to mention the $1 million-plus top prize at stake.

The rounds are likely to go on for five hours or so and spectators were welcomed to watch beginning 8:20 a.m., with tee times running as late as 9:40 a.m. at the course. Access is free and the public may walk the grounds as the matches get underway.
