Manchester City pulled off a stunning fightback to claim their first Premier League title after no less than 44 years. The Citizens scored twice in added time to come back from 2-1 down at the Etihad Stadium against relegation candidates Queens Park Rangers.Manchester City claimed the Premier League title on goal difference from rivals Manchester United, who beat Sunderland 1-0.
Roberto Mancini, the Manchester City manager, was in disbelief after the incredible final minutes of the game.
"Football is incredible”, he said after the game. "This is for our supporters, they deserved this. To win like this is incredible. I've never seen a final day like this. We didn't deserve to lose this game. We had a lot of chances. We deserve to win this championship. After 44 years, for all our supporters it's incredible. It's been a crazy season", Mancini added."We beat United twice in one season, we deserved to win", Mancini said, in reference to City's closest rivals, Manchester United.
Sir Alex Ferguson, the man in charge at United, congratulated City on their achievement but didn't miss the oportunity to congratulate his players as well. “I congratulate City on winning the league, it's not an easy week to win it. Anyone who wins it deserves it. I'm pleased with the performance this season, 89 points would have been enough in most seasons. It wasn't our turn today”, Ferguson said.
Manchester City, Manchester United, Arsenal and Tottenham will take part in next season's Champions League, while Bolton, Blackburn and Wolves are relegated to the Championship. Newcastle will represent England in the Europa League, alongside Carling Cup winners Liverpool and FA Cup winners Chelsea.
