Sports Betting Pursued in the Golden State
California bill makes progress Apart from New Jersey, another US state seems decisive to pursue sports betting – California. Namely, State Senator Rod Wright, who also has an online poker legalisation bill, has introduced bill SB1390, which strives to legalise in-person Nevada-style sports betting at California's racetracks, card clubs and Indian casinos. At the moment, the bill is still in the early stages of moving through the legislature, but it has made some progress, passing the Senate Governmental Organization Committee on Apr. 24 and getting ready for a Senate vote. If it is passed, California's governor will need to consider whether there any constitutional impediments to opening up sports betting in the state, and how to navigate around a federal act that limits sports betting to just three states? According to the bill's maker, Sen. Wright, the federal ban will eventually be lifted, but he wasn't so specific about the timeframe. He said: "Californians spend multiple billions of dollars going to places [jurisdictions] where this is legal."
