Portuguese Action To Be Ceased by Betclic?
Gambling monopoly-initiated litigation could have massive negative impact for football sponsorships The latest statement from Betclic informs the public that the company is about to depart the Portuguese market. The main reason for this may be the litigation initiated by Portuguese gambling monopoly Santa Casa de Misericordia de Lisboa against Betclic, Bwin and other European internet gambling groups. It is quite obvious that the litigation could have a major negative impact on football sponsorships by online gambling companies in that country, having in mind that only Betclic has such deals with some 28 regional soccer clubs. Recently, Betclic was unsuccessful in defending itself against bans on its advertising in the country, even though the court refused to grant an order for costs in favour of Santa Casa. Betclic now has 30 days to file an appeal against the finding, but it's still not known whether it will do so.
