Other Asian nations' success may be the strongest influence
A report arrived this week that the Vietnamese government is reviewing its negative position on sports betting, probably under the influence of the success of other Asian nations in the controlled introduction of strictly regulated gambling.
Namely, a statement was issued by the Finance Ministry on Mar. 5 that it plans to legalise the pastime under rigorous regulatory requirements, adding that the legalization of betting on soccer matches and other sporting events would help limit the social damage caused by illegal operations.
In order to find out more about the facts and figures of the regulation matters, the Ministry sent a delegation, led by Minister for Finance Vuong Dinh Hue, to Singapore, where it met with members of the city state's gaming board and studied the successful handling of betting by government regulation.
After the visit, the minister stated that his department would now start planning the legalization of sports betting in Vietnam, where only foreign nationals are currently permitted to gamble in the country's casino resorts.
