Successful undercover "Operation Flat Rate"
Early Tuesday morning raids conducted by New York authorities ended up in arresting thirty-seven people linked to the Gambino family. The "Operation Flat Rate" investigation obtained evidence from a variety of sources that included wiretaps, GPS tracking, video and audio surveillance and was conducted throughout Manhattan, New Jersey, Brooklyn and Staten Island, and resulted in charging the suspects with crimes ranging from felony to misdemeanor counts.
In details regarding the operation the authorities brought out in public various alleged bookmaking and loan sharking activities related to the Gambino family enterprises. They said that these involved two offshore sports gambling operations as well millions of dollars in revenues generated from wagers placed on college and professional sports and horse racing.
"These arrests cripple a network of criminal enterprises and the organized crime family they supported," said Attorney General Eric Schneiderman.
It is expected that the defendants' next court appearance will be on December 8, 2011.
