Match between Nigeria and Argentina under investigation

The football match between Nigeria and Argentina, held on June 1, triggered much suspicion due to the betting patterns reported by online betting companies. Therefore, it is now being investigated by FIFA, due to potential fixing of the match that ended with 4:1 for Nigeria.

The final, fifth goal, scored by Argentina from penalty in added time is the focus of the investigation, as it was predicted by a whole surge in gambling.

According to a FIFA spokesman, "Fifa can confirm that this match between Nigeria and Argentina was one that we had an active interest in, and forms part of a wider ongoing Fifa investigation." It was also indicated by FIFA President Sepp Blatter, that he indends to crack down on the 'plague' of match fixing.

The match referee Referee Chaiboi, who allowed the play to go on till the 98th minute, was involved in another FIFA investigated match - the friendly game between Bahrain and Togo held on September 7.
