Delhi police in swift action
As it was expected, the World Cup cricket tournament which started this week caused much wagering action among Indian punters. However, the sub-continental police decided to engage in even more action, organizing a number of raids in order to crack down on the practice.
The raids therefore resulted in three broken betting rings, eight arrests, and seizure of a significant amount of equipment, reported the New Delhi Police.
Even though cricket is a very popular sport in India, betting on it, as well as any other sport except horse racing, is illegal in India. In light of this, less than a month ago, three Pakistan cricket representatives received a five-year ban for match-fixing against an England team.
