State Funding for Italian Horse Racing?

Jan 31, 2011
A bill proposed by agricultural minister In light of the recent debates regarding the UK and Irish horseracing levy and funding, the latest reports from Italy seem more promising for the horse racing industry, as the agricultural minister Giancarlo Galan told the parliament that horseracing needs a permanent state funding solution separate from income raised through betting. He compared this proposal to the principle of financing the Italian National Olympic Committee. The minister's proposed bill presents how the Italian racing's governing body UNIRE should be funded in future and proposes a reorganization of UNIRE in a way that will enable it to deal with racing on a national level (rather than regional one) and turn into a regulator in place of its current position of an organization that performs managerial tasks in the name of the government. Since the Italian horse racing industry is currently in great need, it was reported that the government promised to allocate some Euro 150 million for its rehabilitation.
