Gambling Commission Keeps An Eye On Sportsbetting

But most cases of suspicious activity reported by operators themselves

The protection of the integrity of sport in the UK is receiving the Gambling Commission's close attention, although there were relatively few suspicious betting transactions during the period September 2007 to June 2009...and most of those were flagged by betting site operators themselves.

During the period under review there were 56 cases of suspicious activity, 39 of which were reported by operators while 17 came from other sources such as sport governing bodies, the media and the public.

Of the total, 27 cases were not substantiated while 21 were adjudged to be sufficiently suspicious to be passed on to the relevant sports governing bodies for further investigation. In addition, there were eight active investigations in which the Commission was currently involved.

Most reports concerned football betting at 18 cases, followed by 10 horseracing complaints. Snooker, darts, tennis and greyhound racing tied for third with four cases each while golf, rugby league and bowls had three each.
