American Football League

What was the American Football League (AFL)? Well the AFL was a professional league that operated for a brief period during 1960 to 1969 in direct competition to the well established NFL. In comparison, it was at first viewed as the inferior league to the NFL but by the mid 1960's, it grew to attract top players from colleges and even the NFL itself.

Eventually, the AFL and NFL merged which was finalized in 1970 and saw the dissipation of the AFL. All ten of the franchises within the AFL became part of the almagamated AFC (American Football Conference) alongside three teams from the original NFL. During the last 2 years of AFL's existence, the Super Bowl III and IV saw two magnificent upset victories of AFL teams over the NFL teams which has been considered by many to be the biggest upsets in football history.

The influence of the AFL has played such a big role in the progession of professional football that during the 2009 season, it's 50th anniversary will be celebrated
