That was cold!
« on: August 09, 2012, 05:05:18 PM »
US gymnast McKayla Maroney wasn't happy after winning the silver medal. But she's young, only 16, so she has a lot to learn. I bet next time, if she doesn't win, she won't be this bitter.

I didn't like her attitude to be honest but I agree that she's young and maybe she will learn that it's a bit rude to act like that on the podium during a ceremony at the Olympics.

I think it is a look of total disappointment in herself. They are pushed so hard and she was labeled the worlds best and when she didn't deliver i think she not only let herself down but everyone else who counted on her getting a gold.

She is very young but so are so many others who keep their composure no matter what so not so sure that is an excuse here. Sometimes we are so hard on these athletes when they don't react the way we think they should and i am just as guilty of doing this.

I was just watching the synchronized swimming just this morn and the team that won the gold was completely expressionless. But as hard as they train they had to be happy.

The media will tear you apart and i hope they are all remembered for the dedication and great athletes they are.

What? Did she have an itch on her face for a split second? Was she biting the inside of her lip out of nervousness? A picture was snapped at a particular moment and she is deemed cold and rude? I watched the ceremony and I didn't see an overwhelming amount of gushing giggles from the bronze or gold winners either.

I'm not sure what that 20 second video shows other than a girl who is extremely disappointed in herself. Where's the disrespect?

This is not the best quality of the ceremony but it's all I could find.

Her whole attitude was not perceived as a result of disappointement, she looked arrogant and I guess she really was arrogant.

There's a big difference between her and another American gymnast at the 2012 Olympics: Gabrielle Douglas.

Kayla was arrogant, or at least she seemed so. The result: 1 gold medal (with the team, but she only competed in the vault, Douglas and Wieber did most of the work) and 1 silver.

Gabrielle was humble and sweet. The result: 2 gold medals, one of them as the best all-around gymnast, which is by far the most important medal in the contest.

But I agree with Lips, Maroney was under a lot of pressure given her previous results, and pressure is a tough thing to handle at that age.

LOL Didn't see that coming Lips.  Good one.

I gotta put my two cents in.   She is very young and she was probably so angry with herself it came out as a snotty little girl who didn't win.  She was likely kicking herself inside and I can understand that.

I must of missed something in the video. I took as the announcer was cold in his remarks the title is "Cold dis" he was dissing the girl. Did you read the comments under this video? It turned into a political cold war.

I did watch the finals and she seemed very dissatisfied, which I guess was expected. However the speaker did refer to her attitude few times and the camera was constantly fixed on her and her reaction.

It did seem like she was acting bitter but then again who wouldn't be. I mean I would have been disappointed myself.

I don't think it speaks of her true character especially the way it was being presented on tele in negative context

She's just a kid and she was under tremendous pressure to bring the gold medal and the eyes of her nation weRe looking at her at all the time. I can't even imagine how tough that might be and to deal with such pressure and expectations.

I would have probably pissed my pants , pardon my French.

On the other hand I have to make a point in regards to all these young gymnastics. They are just kids, 16,17 years old.

And to be frank I don't think it's right to put them through all that brutal training that is required to get to the Olympics. Gymnastic is one of the most demanding disciplines out there , with high risk of injuries and I also heard that it slows the growth of the kids.

Is it really necessary to put them through all that for the sake of representing your country ?

I do understand that most of them love the sports but I think somehow along the way we all lost that one thing that is important. And it's not the money or fame , but sports only for the sake of sports.

Yes i did and it is sad for this kid that has come under such unnecessary scrutiny. And like 2fast said the training for these kids is brutal. I saw where one team i think it was from China are away from their families months at a time and they didn't tell one of the girls her grandmother died during training until after she performed at the Olympics.

It is very sad to see family put on the back burner and these kids are driven so hard to succeed.

During the ceremony everything was fine, she probably felt a bit better, as much as it is possible. However, I think that she showed some disrespect when she refused to congratulate the winner.

I agree with all the things I read here, the amount of pressure they are dealing at such young age is enormous. It must be very tough.
