Sent off for arguing with a team mate!
« on: March 31, 2012, 07:52:11 AM »
Gully Cavani, an Uruguayan soccer player and the brother of the much more famous Edinson Cavani, got sent off during a game in Brazil between his team, Pelotas, and Caxias.

Nothing unusual up to this point. But the reason behind the red card is quite wacky: Gully argued with a team mate and nearly punched him! The other players quickly split up the two contenders but the referee decided to show the red card to Gully Cavani in the 21st minute of the match.

Here's the video: http://youtu.be/lWjqUI9brVc

Was that a harsh decision from the referee?

The scuffle didn't appear too aggressive to me. I think it was a little harsh. It's sports and competitive emotions run high. Does this player have a bad reputation that could explain such a snap decision?

I haven't heard of him having a bad reputation but generally all South American players tend to be rather temperamental ;)

The scuffle wasn't too aggressive, I agree, but I guess some rather unorthodox words might have flown around there as well.

I find this to be strange, I don't think that this was enough for the red card, but then again, he hit him twice and even if we don't know what he said, his body language was very aggressive. .

If there is a zero toleration of any form of violence on the pitch, it was the right decision.  That said, I think a yellow card would have been more appropriate.

At first, I also thought that a yellow card would have been appropriate but I noticed that he didn't protest much, maybe he already had a yellow card.

Yes I wondered the same too Markotik.

Do you know if he had a yellow already Johnny?
