Superb victory for youngster Richard Carapaz, he attacked with around 2km left on the final climb to become the first ever rider from Ecuador to claim a Grand Tour stage win. Chris Froome was in difficulty again but somehow managed to stick to the front group.

Wow, just now I noticed the Giro thread you've created Johhny :) any impressions from the race so far?
Michelton-Scott team looks really solid, Yates no doubt the best climber so far so who do you fancy for the general victory Johhny?

I guess Dumoulin is still the huge favourite but who knows...if the rest could gain some more advantage before the time trial it could be different..I guess Dumoulin will gain at least minute and a half to Yates in that but we know the leaders jersey giving the cyclist some extra power.

One thing is for sure it will be very interesting with all the climb stages and the time trial so we could only enjoy it.

I agree that Dumoulin is still the big favourite, he should be able to give at least 1 minute and a half to Yates in the time trial. However, I think that the stage that ends on Mount Zoncolan (next Saturday) might decide everything, if any of the favourites has a bad day there, he's done.

I'm curious how Michelton- Scott will carry trough the race as a team, I think they have the strongest team( for sure as a climbing one) so their strategy would be vital I believe, sooner or later they should stick to one leader, whether that would be Yates or Chaves ( working together is a possibility too depending on how the race and a particular stage would develop) and use that advantage over Dumoulin in the mountain stages of course.

Pinot looking very fresh himself but I think all the climbers should realize they should work together against Dumoulin in the climbing stages (according the rules of course :))because  it's somewhat of a mutual interest as Dumoulin is by far the best time trialist.

And what about Froome mate?

It is just a bad/late form or he's affected of whole that doping saga or...maybe he's just getting too old for all that efforts needed?

Mitchelton–Scott are in the best possible position right now, because Chaves and Yates can take turns in attacking Dumoulin. That is their best option, because neither of the two is much better than Dumoulin in the mountains, at least they have not proven that so far. So I don't think they have to choose a leader between the two, they have to work together by attacking Dumoulin one after the other.

Pinot has a valid chance but we'll have to see how his form will be throughout the three weeks. He doesn't have such a strong team, so he will have to do things himself most of the time. I think Pinot will try to take advantage of the work that the Mitchelton–Scott are doing, but ultimately he will have to show that he has the legs on the most difficult climbs.

Froome doesn't look like himself, might be the stress from the doping thing or he might still be out of shape and that affects his confidence as well. His aim is to do the Giro - Tour double this season, so I guess his training was scheduled in order to reach peak form at the Tour and that would mean he won't be able to reach more than reasonable form at the Giro. I doubt he can win the Giro with just reasonable form, the race is way too tough for that.

Today's stage 10 is, in theory, one for the sprinters, the road does go up and down some hills for most of the day but the final kilometers are flat. However, we might have some surprises because this will be the longest stage of this year's Giro, 244 kilometers.

Here are the odds for stage 10 at Sportingbet:

Elia Viviani (ITA) 8.00
Sam Bennett (IRL) 12.00
Sacha Modolo (ITA) 15.00
Tim Wellens (BEL) 15.00
Diego Ulissi (ITA) 17.00
Matej Mohoric (SLO) 21.00
Jarlinson Pantano Gomez (COL) 6.00
Alexey Lutsenko (KAZ) 34.00
Tony Martin (GER) 34.00
Valerio Conti (ITA) 34.00
Tosh Van der Sande (BEL) 34.00
Nicolas Roche (IRL) 67.00
Kristian Sbaragli (ITA) 67.00
Tanel Kangert (EST) 67.00
Giulio Ciccone (ITA) 67.00
Wout Poels (NED) 67.00

Good luck!

Strange day today, the breakaway produced the winner but the most important thing happened at the start of the stage as Esteban Chaves had some problems and was dropped on the first climb of the day. He never managed to recover and ended up losing more than 10 minutes, so he's out of contention for the general classification now. Simon Yates gained another 3 seconds on his rivals by winning an intermediate sprint.

Stage 10 results

1   Matej Mohoric (Slo) Bahrain-Merida   6:04:52
2   Nico Denz (Ger) AG2R La Mondiale

6   Mads Würtz Schmidt (Den) Katusha-Alpecin
7   Francesco Gavazzi (Ita) Androni Giocattoli-Sidermec
8   Jarlinson Pantano (Col) Trek-Segafredo
9   Gianluca Brambilla (Ita) Trek-Segafredo
10   José Gonçalves (Por) Katusha-Alpecin

General classification after stage 10

Wednesday's stage 11 is short, just 156km, but very explosive, with numerous short climbs and descents. There won't be a mass sprint at the end of this one because there are a few walls to climb in the final 30km, so who will have the legs and the courage to attack will take this one.

Here are the odds for stage 11 at Sportingbet:

Enrico Battaglin (ITA) 5.50
Simon Yates (GBR) 10.00
Tim Wellens (BEL) 10.00
Diego Ulissi (ITA) 11.00
Thibaut Pinot (FRA) 16.00
Giovanni Visconti (ITA) 19.00
Davide Formolo (ITA) 19.00
Jose Goncalves (POR) 19.00
Maximilian Schachmann (GER) 21.00
Gianluca Brambilla (ITA) 34.00
Patrick Konrad (AUT) 34.00
Ben Hermans (BEL) 51.00
Tony Martin (GER) 51.00
George Bennett (NZL) 51.00
Nicolas Roche (IRL) 101.00
Wout Poels (NED) 101.00

Good luck!

Second stage win for Yates, he clearly is in great shape, and another few seconds gained on Dumoulin. Chris Froome got dropped again and lost around 40 seconds, not looking good ahead of the weekend's big mountains.

Stage 11 results

2   Tom Dumoulin (Ned) Team Sunweb   0:00:02

5   Domenico Pozzovivo (Ita) Bahrain-Merida
6   Patrick Konrad (Aut) Bora-Hansgrohe
7   Thibaut Pinot (Fra) Groupama-FDJ
8   Maximilian Schachmann (Ger) Quick-Step Floors   0:00:11
9   Rohan Dennis (Aus) BMC Racing Team   0:00:18

Another great stage in the Giro, Yates was really sharp but Dumoulin looking impressive himself so I think we know have a clear answer of which are the two real contenders.

Pozzovivo and Pinot looking good too but I guess the battle there would be for the last place on the podium plus if someone else shows a great form in the climbing stages of course.

Saturday's final climb will tell us who can win this Giro and who can't. That climb is 10km long with an average gradient of 12%, there's no place to hide.

Today's stage was made quite difficult by the rain, Elia Viviani got dropped so it was quite easy for Sam Bennett to dominate the sprint. No changes in the general classification.
