It isn't easy to beat the horses, Brian. But if you are serious about betting on them, I would recommend you learn the Andrew Beyer Speed Rating System.
Daily Racing Forms carry the Beyer Speed Rating numbers. They are listed in bold face on the left side of horse's name.
Beyer invented a system of rating a horse's true speed on various tracks around the country. I concocted a system of taking a horse's two highest speed ratings and then refining them by subtracting for lengths beaten in that particular race. I also add or subtract according to the weight the horse is carrying that day. If I come up with a horse that has two speed ratings higher than its competition, that horse becomes my choice.
I recommend any horse player invest a couple of dollars in books by Andrew Beyer. He has won more pick sixes than anybody I know and his speed rating system is powerful and effective.
But before Brian goes to Hollywood Park, I want to leave him with a story. I once interviewed comedian Milton Berle and asked him a stock question I ask in all celebrity interviews: if you could do it all over again and change one thing in your life, what would that thing be? Berle's answer: 'I wouldn't have lost the $4 million I lost betting on the horses.'
