Premier League: Jermain Defoe to join Bournemouth
Sunderland striker Jermain Defoe has agreed to join Premier League side Bournemouth on a free transfer. The striker was still under contract with Sunderland, but a clause in the deal allows him to move on a free transfer if the Black Cats get relegated. Defoe has signed a three-year contract with Bournemouth, a club that he already knows well as he had a successful loan spell at the Cherries. Jermain Defoe, aged 34, has played for Bournemouth in the 2000-2001 season, on loan from West Ham, and he scored 18 league goals in 29 matches for the Cherries. Then he moved to Tottenham and also broke into the England national team. He scored 34 goals in 82 league matches after joining Sunderland from Major League Soccer outfit Toronto FC in January 2015. Bournemouth just wrapped up the best season in the history of the club as they finished 9th in the Premier League with 46 points. Norwegian striker Joshua King was their top goal scorer this season with 16 goals but manager Eddie Howe probably needed to add some more depth to his attack as Benik Afobe and Callum Wilson only managed to score six goals apiece in the campaign. Bournemouth are 11/4 at SkyBet to finish in the top half of the Premier League table next season.
