Back Euro 2016: Jermain Defoe hopes to make 23-man squad

Sunderland veteran striker Jermain Defoe believes he has "done everything right" in order to earn the much-desired call-up for England's Euro 2016 squad. The 33-year-old forward was probably the main reason behind Sunderland's survival in the Premier League this season as he bagged 15 goals for the Black Cats. He has not played for England since November 2013 though.

England head coach Roy Hodgson will name the 23-man squad for the final tournament on Monday. Initially the announcement was supposed to happen on Thursday, but Hodgson decided to postpone it until after the final Premier League match day this weekend. With Danny Welbeck out of contention due to a severe injury, Defoe might have a chance to receive the call-up.

"I'm happy with the way I've performed this season," said Defoe. "I've ticked every box. If I don't go, I can say at least I've done everything right." In fact, Harry Kane and Jamie Vardy are the only English players that have scored more goals than Defoe this season. The former Tottenham striker has returned to England in January 2015 after a spell in the Major League Soccer at Toronto. He as 55 caps and has scored 19 goals for England so far.
