Back Premier League: Liverpool's Mamadou Sakho suspended for 30 days

Liverpool defender Mamadou Sakho has received a 30-day suspension from UEFA as the European football governing body opened disciplinary proceedings against him. The French defender, aged 26, has returned a positive test for a fat-burning medicine after the Europa League match at Manchester United, which has taken place on March 17. The information surfaced last week, and because of it he was kept out of the squad for the match against Newcastle on Saturday.

Manager Jurgen Klopp has also chosen not to take Sakho to Spain for Thursday's Europa League semi-final match against Villarreal. The player has decided not to have his B sample tested, which might indicate that he is willing to admit to his wrongdoing. Liverpool team-mate Kolo Toure has gone through a similar proceeding with the English FA in 2011 when he was banned for six months for taking prohibited slimming medicine.

Mamadou Sakho will surely miss the remainder of the season with Liverpool and he might also miss out on Euro 2016 in France. Head coach Didier Deschamps will name his 23-man squad for the tournament on May 12, which would be a full fortnight before the provisional ban runs out. Sakho has 28 appearances and 2 goals for the French national team, while this season he made 21 Premier League appearances for Liverpool.
