Back Police in Taiwan Bust Major Illegal Online Gambling Ring

Authorities in Taiwan have apprehended 45 individuals for their roles in the operation of an illegal online and mobile betting ring, which reportedly generated over $40 million in profit.

According to reports, bets were accepted on a variety of things from local elections to sports and lottery activity.

Police were alerted to the ring's activity and subsequently raided 31 locations over the weekend. Lin Shih-yuan was initially named as the head of the ring and is among those arrested. A total of 29 people have been released with restrictions while 15 others have been bailed.

In a later update from Taiwan's Criminal Investigation Bureau (CIB), they announced that a total of 52 individuals have now been arrested and they've seized NT$2 billion (approximately $60.49 million) in cash.

A CIB spokesman said that the ring has been in their radar for "a long time" and the raids across various locations on the island has required the assistance of more than 300 police officers.

A M-Police app at the CIB special command center was used to provide communication between CIB and local police due to the sheer size of the operation.

The update also named 35-year-old Kao Hung-yu as the ring's leader. He has been arrested and has already admitted to his role in the online gambling network.

Local media reported that the online gambling ring used a cloud system based in Subic Bay in the Philippines to operate.
