Back Euro 2016 Qualifying: Portugal vs Denmark preview

Portugal can secure their place at Euro 2016 if they avoid defeat against Denmark in Braga on Thursday. On the other hand Denmark could also qualify from Group I if they clinch a win against Portugal. There have been 15 meetings between these two nations: Denmark won just three, Portugal won 10. Last October Cristiano Ronaldo clinched a win for his side in Denmark with a stoppage-time goal.

The latest match for Portugal was a 1-0 friendly defeat against France last month, a match in which Ronaldo and company were not particularly convincing. All they have to do is avoid defeat on Thursday, as such a result could send both Denmark and Albania at the final tournament. Portugal started the campaign with a shock defeat against Albania but then recovered with six consecutive wins. Cristiano Ronaldo has scored five goals during this campaign.

Last month Denmark were held to a 0-0 draw in Armenia, a result which left them just one point ahead of Albania. If the Danes fail to beat Portugal they could end up in the playoff for qualification at the final tournament. Denmark will be relying on their trustworthy defence that has conceded only four goals in seven matches. Former Arsenal Nicklas Bendtner is their top scorer in this campaign with two goals.

Probable line-ups:

Portugal: Patricio - Vieirinha, Pepe, Carvalho, Eliseu - Pereira, Veloso, Silva - Danny, Nani, Ronaldo

Denmark: Schmeichel - Kjær, Agger, Durmisi, Jacobsen - Krohn-Dehli, J.Poulsen, Eriksen - Bendtner, Jørgensen, Y.Poulsen

My prediction: Portugal to win 2-0.

Here are the odds for the match at Bet365:

Portugal win - 1.72 Draw - 3.75 Denmark win - 5.50
