The 2016 Giro d'Italia route was made public by race organisers RCS Sport and it will include three time trials and seven mountain stages. The route is significantly more balanced compared to the previous editions when it seemed designed mostly for climbers. Vincenzo Nibali is likely to target the Giro d'Italia in 2016 alongside Astana team-mate and Vuelta a Espana winner Fabio Aru. Chris Froome, Nairo Quintana and Alberto Contador will probably skip the Giro as they are set to focus on the Tour de France next season, but Richie Porte (BMC) and Mikel Landa (Team Sky) are expected to compete for the Tour of Italy win. Tom Dumoulin of Giant-Alpecin and Thibaut Pinot of FDJ might also be tempted to race in Italy.
The 99th edition of the Giro d'Italia will start on Friday May 6 in the Netherlands and will finish on Sunday May 29 in Turin. The racing begins on Friday so the riders will enjoy an extra rest day after the transfer from the Netherlands to Southern Italy. The first stage will be a 9.8km time trial while the first mountain challenge will be on stage six when the riders will reach the central Apennines.
Stage 9 will surely be an important one as it schedules a 40.4km individual time trial in the Chianti vineyards. Sprinters will also have plenty of stages to target as there will be no less than seven days with potential mass sprint finishes. The real mountain stages start on stage 13 to Cividale del Friuli, while stage 14 to Corvara looks set to be the queen stage of the 2016 Giro d'Italia as it includes six major climbs including the Passo Pordoi, the Passo Campolongo, the Passo Giau and Passo Valparola.
You can't bet on the 2016 Giro d'Italia yet but you can put your money on who you believe will win the 2016 Tour de France, here are the odds at Bet365 for the top three favourites:
Chris Froome - 2.25 Nairo Quintana - 3.00 Alberto Contador - 5.50

Giro d'Italia had always been one of the greatest races for watching. I could only regret that some of the biggest names not participating in the last years. This time the route really looking very balanced and 3 time trials stages!! I can't remember other race with so many but will be very interesting, especially because...

This time the route really looking very balanced and 3 time trials stages!! I can't remember other race with so many but will be very interesting, especially because of the riders with new teams like Porte and Landa. That's have to be a great opportunity for Tom Dumoulin also if he decides to participate.
