Back Premier League: Manchester United deny blame for failed De Gea transfer

Manchester United officially state that they were not at fault for the failure of goalkeeper David De Gea's transfer to Real Madrid. The Spanish club released a statement saying that they did everything possible to complete the deal, worth 29 million pounds, but that the transfer deadline was missed by just two minutes. On the other hand United say they filed in all the paperwork two minutes before the transfer deadline, which was on Monday at 23:00 BST.

The official Manchester United statement added: "The club is delighted that its fan-favourite double player of the year, David De Gea, remains a Manchester United player." However, De Gea has not played at all this season, with new signing Sergio Romero becoming Louis Van Gaal's preferred goalkeeper choice. Real Madrid goalkeeper Keylor Navas, aged 28, was set to move to Manchester United in the same deal.

De Gea joined Manchester United from Atletico Madrid in 2011 for around 19 million pounds. He did make a few errors during his first few months in England but then confirmed his talent and established himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the Premier League. He has made 175 appearances for the Red Devils in all competitions. Now United have four goalkeepers: De Gea, Romero, Sam Johnstone and Victor Valdes, who is out of favour with the manager but whom them club failed to sell despite interest from Besiktas. If De Gea doesn't extend his contract with Manchester United, which expires next summer, he will be able to resume talks with Real Madrid in January and join them for free after six months.

Manchester United are 1.33 at Bet365 to secure a top-four Premier League finish this season.
