WTA world number three Maria Sharapova has decided to pull out of the US Open because of injury. The Russian, aged 28, has not played since Wimbledon due to a knee injury. Here's what she announced on her official Facebook account: "I have done everything possible to be ready but it was just not enough time."
Sharapova, a five-time Grand Slam winner, was scheduled to play Australian world number 37 Daria Gavrilova on Monday. The Russian player added that she will most likely make her return in "a few weeks".
She has won the US Open in 2006 and has not lost in the first round of a Grand Slam since 2010. Everything seemed in order on Saturday when she held a press conference in new York ahead of the tournament at Flushing Meadows. Just 24 hours later she announced her withdrawal on Facebook, leaving her place in the tournament to fellow Russian Daria Kasatkina.

That is sad news for all tennis fans and we all must admit that Grand Slam this year is not same without Maria Sharapova. I think that now Serena Williams have open road to tittle and it will be boring to watch. This year I will stick with man's tournament and hope that Federrer can win.

Serean Williams should advance to the final easily because she could not face high seeded player . Sharapova withdraws from US Open while Suarez Navarro, Karolina Pliskova and Ivanovic are all out. Serena Williams to win 1st quarter @1,3 (4x stake) and Serena Williams to win US Open @1,8 (1x stake) seems a very good bet...

It is such a pittiy to watch a Grand Slam tournament without Masha.Now ,Serena is great favourite for the title.I really think that Sharapova,when is in form ,can be tough rival to Serena Williams.I hope Sharapova will return soon and prove her quality again.

At that age it's always tougher for every athlete to stay fit, especially after serious injuries. Sharapova is only 28 years old but when you think of his professional started when she was just at 15 or 16 so it's pretty normal her body to be very tired all ready. It's better for her to miss a tournament and to be sure...

Maria Sharapova (or Sugapowa) is one of my favourite player. She's a real beauty. Without her this tournament will be more excitement free. Serena Williams is too strong for the other participants. Serena's title on the odds of 1,8 seems a very value bet for me.
