Back Tennis: Maria Sharapova pulls out of the US Open

WTA world number three Maria Sharapova has decided to pull out of the US Open because of injury. The Russian, aged 28, has not played since Wimbledon due to a knee injury. Here's what she announced on her official Facebook account: "I have done everything possible to be ready but it was just not enough time."

Sharapova, a five-time Grand Slam winner, was scheduled to play Australian world number 37 Daria Gavrilova on Monday. The Russian player added that she will most likely make her return in "a few weeks".

She has won the US Open in 2006 and has not lost in the first round of a Grand Slam since 2010. Everything seemed in order on Saturday when she held a press conference in new York ahead of the tournament at Flushing Meadows. Just 24 hours later she announced her withdrawal on Facebook, leaving her place in the tournament to fellow Russian Daria Kasatkina.

With Sharapova out of contention, here are the outright US Open odds at Bet365:

Serena Williams - 1.80 Victoria Azarenka - 10.00 Simona Halep - 11.00 Petra Kvitova - 17.00 Belinda Bencic - 21.00
