Back Premier League: Manchester United sign goalkeeper Sergio Romero

Manchester United have finalised the signing of Argentina goalkeeper Sergio Romero. The move increases speculation regarding David De Gea's transfer to Real Madrid. Romero was signed on a free transfer as the goalie left Sampdoria at the end of his contract. For now he will be the main backup for De Gea after Victor Valdes was placed on the transfer list by manager Louis Van Gaal.

Romero signed a three-year contract with the Red Devils. His career includes the presence at the 2014 World Cup, he even was between the sticks during the final, while in Holland he won the title in 2009 with AZ Alkmaar under Louis Van Gaal. "We have to prepare our season with the threat that David De Gea is going to Real Madrid," said Van Gaal. In case De Gea doesn't leave then the Dutch manager will welcome the competition between the two for a place in the starting eleven: "You need always competition. When I see that a player is better than the player in the line-up, he shall play the next match."

Romero is United's fifth signing of the summer, following the transfers of full-back Matteo Darmian, midfielders Bastian Schweinsteiger and Morgan Schneiderlin and forward Memphis Depay . About Romero, Van Gaal said: "He is a very dominating goalkeeper, he dominates the 60-metre area. His stature is also tall and he gives a lot of confidence to the players. Of course, he has to learn English because that is also a problem always with a foreigner. He is very good with his feet, so he fits in our profile. I have a lot of confidence that he can fulfil what we are expecting."

Manchester United are 6.00 at Bet365 to win the Premier League title next season.
