Back Copa America: Uruguay vs Paraguay preview

Uruguay take on Paraguay in their third and final group match at the Estadio La Portada with both sides aiming for qualification to the quarter-finals. Argentina will most likely win Group B as they take on Jamaica in the last match, which Messi and company will probably win. Paraguay need at least a draw to qualify while Uruguay have no other option than a win. Uruguay have won 30 of the previous direct encounters while Paraguay have recorded 25 wins. The two sides have met in the final of the Copa America four years ago and Uruguay won 3-0 thanks to a pair of goals from Diego Forlan, now retired.

Uruguay started the tournament with an unconvincing 1-0 victory over Jamaica and then were defeated 1-0 by group favourites Argentina. They could also qualify as one of the two best third-placed finishers, but that will depend on what happens in the other groups. Uruguay could drop young striker Diego Rolan as Hull City forward Abel Hernandez could take his place.

Paraguay seem to be doing well under new coach Ramon Diaz, they snatched a point against Argentina after going two goals down and then claimed all three points against Jamaica. They are almost certain of qualifying even if they finish third, but a draw would make sure they finish second in the group. Also, if they manage to beat Uruguay and Argentina suffer an unlikely setback against Jamaica, then Paraguay would win the group.

Probable line-ups:

Uruguay: Muslera - A Pereira, Gimenez, Godin, M Pereira - Sanchez, Arevalo, Lodeiro, Rodriguez - Hernandez, Cavani

Paraguay: Silva - Bruno Valdez, Da Silva, P. Aguilar, Samudio - Gonzalez, V Caceres, Ortigoza, Benitez - Santa Cruz, Bobadilla

My prediction: 1-1 draw.

Here are the odds for the match at Bet365:

Uruguay win - 2.15 Draw - 3.20 Paraguay win - 4.00
