Back Premier League: John Terry extends Chelsea contract

Chelsea captain John Terry has decided to extend his contract at the club until the end of the 2015-16 season. The central defender, now aged 34, has made over 550 appearances for the Blues. His contract was due to expire at the end of the current season.

Chelsea have a six-point advantage at the top of the Premier League table with a game in hand on their rivals. Manager Jose Mourinho said: "This new contract is not to say 'thank you very much'. It is because John continues to perform. He is a top defender." Chelsea's policy is to offer players that are over the age of 30 only one-year deals.

Terry has won 13 major trophies with Chelsea since making his debut in 1998: the Champions League, Europa League, three Premier League titles, five FA Cups and three League Cup trophies. He was the club captain when the team won their two Premier League titles during Mourinho's first spell at Stamford Bridge. "I am happy that he completely deserves this new contract after a season where he has already played 40 matches," added Mourinho. Chelsea have already won the League Cup this season but they were knocked out of the Champions League and FA Cup.

Chelsea are 1/16 at Bet365 to retain the Premier League title this season.
