Back Premier League: West Ham's Andy Carroll faces lengthy spell on the sidelines

West Ham striker Andy Carroll will be out of contention for several weeks after leaving Wednesday's draw at Southampton on crutches. The forward was enjoying his first match since suffering a knee injury on January 31.

"He got kicked in the back of the knee and felt something wrong," said West Ham boss Sam Allardyce. Carroll was forced to remain on the pitch because his side were already down to 10 men and had made all three substitutions.

"He stayed up and was a nuisance," said Allardyce. "I just hope that staying on hasn't done any more damage." Goalkeeper Adrian was sent off in the 61st minute after handling the ball outside the penalty area. West Ham were looking into the possibility of signing former Real Madrid midfielder Lassana Diarra on a free transfer but it appears the deal can not go through. Allardyce said: "We have negotiated for weeks to get the right deal and, now we've got it, we find we can't get the right paperwork and the right clearance, so we have wasted his time and our time."

West Ham are currently 14/1 at Bet365 to clinch a surprising top-six finish at the end of the season.
