Skybet Employs iBeacon as Their New High-Tech Marketing Technology
Apple's iBeacon is already finding usage in the online gambling industry. Beacon is Apple's implementation of Bluetooth low-energy (BLE) wireless technology, which creates a different way of providing location-based information and services to iPhones and other iOS devices. British online gambling group Skybet has introduced this new technology at two Championship club stadiums - Leeds United and Rotherham United. Skybet is a UK football league sponsor and now football fans can receive push notifications at these two locations in a trial program that can soon be implemented at other sport venues. Passing one of positioned Beacons will send notifications of offers available or items around them which customers haven't already noticed. Punters can opt in to receive notifications of betting possibilities or advertisements. In the stadium trials, punters who are enjoying the game can receive notifications from Skybet, such as a welcome message which would lead to their betting page. Apple started using the technology last year, pushing the use of Bluetooth and testing the product in retails. Andrew Walton, Skybet's head of core products, commented “This is a really exciting opportunity to use our unique title sponsorship with the Football League and its clubs to improve the fan experience at football grounds across the country." "The feedback from both clubs has been encouraging and, although this technology is still very new, the potential is enormous. Our customers could soon be receiving tailored messages and offers at every Sky Bet Football League game, allowing them to benefit even further from our sponsorship.” "The iBeacon technology was tested at Elland Road during our game with Sheffield Wednesday. For any of our fans wishing to bet on the game it helps them find the best place for special offers and promotions from our betting partner," said a Leeds United spokesman.
