Back Tennis: Chinese player Li Na set to retire

Grand Slam winner Li Na will announce her retirement from tennis according to Chinese state media reports. She is 32 years old and has won the Australian open in January after claiming success at Roland Garros in 2011.

The current world number six has not played since losing in the third round at Wimbledon in June. Chinese state broadcaster CCTV said Li Na was retiring because of knee injury concerns and that she would announce her decision on Friday.

Li became a national hero in China after becoming Asia's first grand slam singles champion. Only Russian star Maria Sharapova has higher off-court earnings, according to the Forbes list of highest paid athletes.

Li Na is still listed among the favourites to win the 2015 Australian Open at Bet365, she is 16/1 to win the tournament while Serena Williams is 15/8 to start the year with a Grand Slam victory.
