Back Basketball: Team USA retains FIBA World Cup title

The United States of America continued their domination of the international basketball scene after demolishing Serbia 129-92 on Sunday evening. The US team grabbed their second consecutive gold medal victory at the FIBA World Cup. Kyrie Irving scored 26 points on 6-for-6 shooting from the 3-point line, while James Harden added 23 points. The Americans were trailing 7-15 early in the game but a 60-22 run made sure they won the first half. The score was 67-41 at half time and the lead got even bigger at the end of the third quarter, 105-67.

Irving and Harden combined for 9-of-11 3-point shooting while eight of twelve US players finished in double-digit scoring. This was the 63rd consecutive win for the US team, 45 of them in FIBA events and the other 18 in exhibition matches. The victory also gave the US team an automatic spot in the basketball competition of the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio de Janeiro.

This was the fifth World Cup title for USA, tying Yugoslavia for the most all-time championship winners. Kyle Irving was named tournament MVP while the other players included in the Mythical Five were Kenneth Faried (USA), Serbia's Milos Teodosic, France's Nicolas Batum, and Spain's Pau Gasol. Faried and Klay Thompson had 12 points apiece, while Rudy Gay and DeMarcus Cousins fired 11 each. Rudy Gay and Stephen Curry each added 10 points for US. Nikola Kalinic and Nemanja Bjelica led Serbia with 18 points apiece, while Bogdan Bogdanovic had 15 and Teodosic added 10.
