Premier League: Arsenal sign Manchester United's Danny Welbeck
Arsenal have completed the signing of Manchester United forward Danny Welbeck for 16 million pounds on transfer deadline day. The 23-year-old England international has signed a long-term deal with the Gunners. "Everyone at Arsenal welcomes Danny to the club and looks forward to his contribution in an Arsenal shirt this season," a club statement read. Welbeck scored 29 goals in 142 appearances for Manchester United and has already earned 26 England caps. But since Manchester United decided to sign fellow striker Radamel Falcao, Welbeck was told that he would be allowed to leave. He had joined United's academy aged eight, also played 28 times during a loan spell with Sunderland, and made another eight appearances for Preston. Sunderland also wanted to sign the striker, albeit on loan, and Tottenham also seemed interested. Arsenal pushed the deal through, forced by Olivier Giroud's long-term injury. Welbeck has made his England debut in March 2011 and scored eight goals for the Three Lions. He is part of the England squad for Wednesday's friendly match against Norway. Arsenal are 11/1 at Bet365 to win the Premier League title this season.
