Bwin Execs Facing a Potential EUR 40K Fine from French Authorities
Prior to the days of legalized online gambling in France, Bwin founders Norbert Teufelberger and Manfred Bodner struggled with the French authorities regarding soccer sponsorships with French clubs among other online gambling related issues. Such disagreements have caused a French court to recommend that the two founders pay a Euro 40,000 fine. The main French betting companies in 2006 were La Française des Jeux and Pari-Mutuel Urbain, who had complaints about Bwin's online gambling activities in France. Both companies withdrew claims but prosecutors continued to look into the issues. Bwin has been accused of violations going back to 2003 and has led to consideration of a fine. There will be quite a bit of focus placed on how Bwin deals with this since they were also in hot water with Belgian authorities in 2012.
