Jason Giambi of the Indians Breaks MLB Record
On Monday night we saw the White Sox and Indians tied in a game at Progressive Field in Cleveland. Jason Giambi, 42, approached the plate as pinch-hitter and became the oldest player to hit a walk-off home run! Giambi now holds the title of oldest player in baseball history to hit a walk-off home run. The record was previously held by Braves great, Hank Aaron; however as of Monday evening's game, Giambi was 45 days older than Aaron was on the date of his record breaking hit on July 11, 1976. Giambi held a .194 batting average but played well and managed to pull off a record breaking move by getting on base at a .301 clip with seven homers in 124 at-bats. At 42-years-old Giambi is the third oldest MLB player to be active this season. The two players include Darren Oliver of the Blue Jays and Mariano Rivera of the Yankees have had a better season in terms of performance in comparison to Giambi up to this point. Oliver has a 3.82 ERA in 33 innings while Rivera still plays like a youngster even though he's in his final season in Major League Baseball.
