Five Years in Prison for the "King of Betfair"
Elliott Short, (26), was jailed for five years for claiming to be the “King of Betfair” and convincing family friends to sink GBP400,000 into his false betting system on the betting exchange. As Southwark crown court heard, Short boasted that he could make extremely high returns using his bogus 'system' on Betfair, but the system never worked and, according to Betfair, Short quoted impossible figures. What is more, he deceived the News of the World reporters into running a story about his gambling success and writing that he allegedly netted more than GBP 21 million from his system. Imagine the embarrassment for the newspaper to subsequently publish a retraction. The fraudster's film-like lifestyle included chauffeuring around in a Mercedes, staying at upmarket hotels, clubbing it large in London nightspots, holidaying overseas, and spending big on fashionable clothes from top retailers. After a jury convicted Short, Judge Peter Testar bitterly concluded that he had "lied shamefully through his teeth" in conning money from his victims.
