Former Notre Dame Player Mirko Jurkovic Dies
Mirko Jurkovic, a former University of Notre Dame football player, passed away due to cancer on Wednesday night at 42 years old according to the athletic department at the university. Jurkovic was a member of the 1988 national championship team and went on to become an All-American offensive guard. Jurkovic was originally from Calumet City, IL and played defensive tackle for the 1988 Notre Dame team and went on as offensive guard in 1990 and 1991. Jurkovic was a player on teams that won the Fiesta Bowl, the Orange Bowl and the Sugar Bowl. “I was with Mirko and told him to be straight with Bo so he says, 'Well, thank you, but I'm going to Notre Dame next week and if they offer me a scholarship too, sorry, I'm going there,''' John Jurkovic, Mirko's older brother, recalled Monday night. “And Bo said, 'Hot damn, it doesn't get any straighter than that.' He didn't sugarcoat anything. He knew there were no shortcuts in life and was willing to work for everything he got.'' The funeral will be held at The McGann Hay funeral home in Granger on Saturday. Jurkovic is survived by his wife and three children.
