Arsene Wenger could sell Alex Song to Barcelona after van Persie's departure to Manchester United
Arsenal manager Arsene Wenger says Alex Song could leave Arsenal, but the manager also hinted there could still be further additions to the squad. Robin van Persie is set to join Manchester United and midfielder Alex Song has been linked with a move to Spanish giants Barcelona. In terms of incoming transfers, Arsenal are reportedly interested in Real Madrid midfielder Nuri Sahin. When asked about the possibility of more signings in addition to the departure of Song, Wenger had a brief response: "Both can happen." Alex Song is one of Arsene Wenger's longest-serving players, having joined Arsenal at the age of 17 from French side Bastia back in 2005. The Cameroonian international went on to make over 200 appearances for Arsenal. His current contract is due to expire in the summer of 2014. Abou Diaby and Jack Wilshere are both close to a return to full match fitness and that would give Wenger plenty of choices in the middle of the pitch. "Midfield is an area where we have much more freedom to make decisions," Wenger added. Should Song leave, he will be the second big name to leave Arsenal after Robin Van Persie's agreed switch to Manchester United. Van Persie scored no less than 30 goals in the Premier League last season but Wenger has brought in two new strikers this summer: Olivier Giroud and Lukas Podolski. The Arsenal manager admits that the sale of Van Persie could be a gamble, but he is confident his side has the quality to compete at the top of the table. "We have lost world-class players before and we have always survived," he said. "We wanted to keep Robin van Persie. The reality is when the player doesn't want to stay, you have two ways - you either force him to stay, or you accept the reality and let him go. I've chosen the second solution. I know it's a massive challenge and a massive gamble I took, but I feel that we have the quality to deal with the problem we have."
