March Madness? It began with a Illinois high school basketball in 1939 when Henry V. Porter, an official of the Illinois High School Association, wrote an article about the state tournament titled "March Madness" for the association's magazine.
The term stayed in Illinois until 1982, when CBS sportscaster Brent Musburger used it during coverage of the NCAA tournament. The Illinois association applied to trademark the term in 1989 and, seven years later, sued an NCAA corporate partner to prevent its use of March Madness, according to the Slate article.
The two sides finally compromised, jointly forming the March Madness Athletic Association. As a result, the Illinois association controls the name at the high school level, while the NCAA has the rights in connection with the collegiate tournament.
