Definition of the "Point Spread"

A betting device, established by oddsmakers and used to attract bettors for uneven competitions, indicating the estimated number of points by which a stronger team can be expected to defeat a weaker team, the point spread being added to the weaker team's actual points in the game and this new figure then compared to the stronger team's points to determine winning bets. I will give an example below.

Last night May 19th in the NBA Playoffs There was a game Between the Denver Nuggets and the L.A Lakers the oddsmakers in Las Vegas made the L.A. Lakers a 6 point favorite, which meens if you wanted to bet on L.A then they have to win the game by MORE then 6 points, if you wanted to bet on Denver they could actually LOSE the game and you could win your bet. Here was the final score.

Denver Nuggets 103
        vs
L. A. Lakers      105


Even though L.A won the game, in the world of sports gambling you would have lost your $$$ on them because they did not win by more then the point spread, so even though Denver lost the game they were the winner in the gambling world, as you would add the 6 points to the final score, so in all the sportsbooks, either in vegas or online the "gaming" final score would be.
