There was a big upset right away at the Winston-Salem Open as second seed Jurgen Melzer was beaten by Igor Andreev in the second round. The other seeded player that entered the court yesterday did pull through though, Marcos Baghdatis cruised past Sweeting to get to the third round. Former world number 1 Leyton Hewitt didn't manage to get to the second round as he was defeated by Kavcic in straight sets.

It was a good day for the favourites as almost all of them managed to pull through to the next round. Top seed Andy Roddick had an easy game while the likes of Dolgopolov, Isner and Davydenko also defeated their less illustrious opponents in straight sets. The biggest surprise was Belgian player Steve Darcis who managed to defeat 11th seed Tursunov.

Andy Roddick eased into the quarter finals after defeating Giraldo in two fairly one-sided sets. All the big names pulled through except Nikolai Davydenko who lost in straight sets to Ukrainian Stakhovski. Another player to note is Julien Benneteau who reaches the quarter finals despite having to play in the qualifying rounds to get to the main draw.

Andy Roddick and John Isner set up an all-American semi final as they managed to qualify after beating Monaco and Baghdatis respectively. Julien Benneteau continued his fairytale run at the Salem Open as he defeated Stakhovsky in three sets after rescuing a match point in the tie break of the second set.

The all-American semi final clash saw John Isner beating top seed Andy Roddick in straight sets but the big surprise was in the other semi final where Julien Benneteau continued his amazing run by beating Robin Hasse after three thrilling sets and not before rescuing two match points!

And I was right, it would have been too risky! John Isner recovered from losing the first set and defeated Julien Benneteau to lift the third ATP title of his career.
